Troubleshooting
Smart lock Bluetooth not connecting
Last updated
The fix
Force-quit the TTLock app on every other phone that has previously connected, then stand within one metre of the lock, open your app, and tap the lock's icon. TTLock locks hold one active Bluetooth session at a time, so a second phone left open nearby is the single most common cause of a failed connection.
If that alone doesn't fix it, re-check your phone's Bluetooth and Location permissions for the app — both steps are covered below.
Why it happens
TTLock locks broadcast over Bluetooth Low Energy and only accept one live connection. When a second device tries to connect while another session is still open — even in the background — the handshake times out silently, and the app just spins or shows nothing.
- Another phone or tablet still has the app open in the background.
- Location permission is off — Android needs it to scan for Bluetooth devices.
- The phone is more than 2–3 metres from the lock, or a metal door is blocking it.
- The lock's battery is critically low and it stopped advertising.
Step-by-step fix
- 1
Close the app on every other device
Swipe the TTLock or Smart Lukko app away from recents on any other phone that shares this lock, including a housemate's or guest's phone. - 2
Stand within a metre of the lock
Bluetooth range through a wooden door is short. Stand directly in front of the lock rather than in a hallway or another room. - 3
Check Bluetooth and Location permissions
On iOS: Settings → [App name] → Bluetooth must be on. On Android: Settings → Apps → [App name] → Permissions → Location and Nearby devices must both be allowed. - 4
Toggle Bluetooth off and on
Turn your phone's Bluetooth off for ten seconds and back on. This clears a stuck connection cache without restarting the phone. - 5
Restart the app
Fully close and reopen the app, then pull down on the lock list to refresh before tapping the lock again. - 6
Replace the batteries
A lock under roughly 20% battery can drop its Bluetooth signal strength. Swap in fresh batteries and retry immediately. - 7
Restart your phone
A stale Bluetooth stack on the phone itself occasionally blocks new pairings. A full restart resolves it in most remaining cases.
If that didn't work
If the lock still won't connect after a restart, check whether it responds to its physical keypad or key — if it doesn't respond at all, the problem is the lock's hardware or battery, not Bluetooth. A factory reset (hold the physical key/reset button per your lock's manual) will clear its paired state, but it also erases all passcodes and eKeys stored on the lock itself, so only use it as a last resort and re-share access afterwards.
Still stuck? Email support@smartlukko.com with your lock model and phone OS version, or contact the lock manufacturer if it's out of warranty for hardware support.
Frequently asked questions
- Why does my lock connect on one phone but not another?
- TTLock locks only hold one Bluetooth session at a time. If the app is open on a second phone, the first phone will fail to connect until that session closes.
- Does Bluetooth range matter with a metal door?
- Yes. Metal doors and frames attenuate Bluetooth signal significantly, so effective range often drops to under a metre — stand as close as possible.
- Do I need Location permission for Bluetooth to work?
- On Android, yes. Android requires Location permission for any app performing Bluetooth Low Energy scans, even though the lock has nothing to do with GPS.
- Can low battery cause Bluetooth connection failures?
- Yes. As batteries drop below about 20%, some locks reduce Bluetooth transmit power to conserve energy, which shortens effective range.
